Quinta do Vallado

In 2009 Quinta do Vallado decided to increase its area of vineyards, having chosen the Upper Douro as the most favorable location to do so. Quinta do Orgal, located in Castelo Melhor - Vila Nova de Foz Côa was acquired, where in 2009 the first vineyards started to be planted.

The Douro Valley, namely the sub-region of the Upper Douro, is one of the most wonderful, imposing and dramatic territories of Europe and the world.

In this section of the Douro River, closer to it's source, in Spain, nature remains practically intact, due to the low level of construction, and inexistence of polluting industries. For all these reasons, this region was considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Although this is the sub-region of the Douro with the lowest density of vine plantation, it is nowadays considered as one of the terroirs with most potential in the Douro.

Since acquiring de estate in 2009, more than 30 hectares of vine have already been planted, always in the slopes facing North, rising from 127 to 300 meters, in predominantly slate soils. The grape varieties planted were:

  • Touriga Nacional (69,5%)
  • Touriga Franca (27,1%)
  • Sousão (3,4%).

In 2015 Quinta do Vallado decided to create an extension of its Wine Hotel at Quinta do Orgal - having built Casa do Rio in this new property. With only 6 suites, it is an unique hotel, strategically located between the vineyards and the river and with an outstanding view over the Douro River.
