Quinta do Vallado

The region of Foz Côa is covered by two Special Protected Areas (SPA) for birds: the SPA of Vale do Côa and the SPA of International Douro and Vale do Águeda.

Near River Côa's mouth, the deep valley with numerous rocky outcrops is classified as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International.

Some of the region's symbols are: the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron pernkopterus), the Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), the Griffon (Gryphus), the Scops Owl (Otus Scops), the Black Weather (Oenanthe leucura), the Red Beaked Chough (Pyrrhocorax graculus), and the Oriole (Oriolus oriolus).

In this region some species critically threatened by extinction can be found, such as:

BLACK-VULTURE (CR) - Aegypius monachus
RED-KITE (CR ) - Milvus milvus
NORTHERN-HARRIER (CR | VU) - Circus cyaneus
BLACK-WEATEAR (CR) - Oenanthe leucura

The species of mammals are also abundant, some of which are in danger of extinction, such as:

IBERIAN-WOLF (EN) - Canis lupus
CABRERA-VOLE (VU) - Microtus cabrerae
PYRENEAN-DESMAN (VU) - Galemys pyrenaicus
BENT-WING-BAT (VU) - Miniopterus schreibersi
LESSER-MOUSE-EARED-BAT (CR) - Myotis blythii
NATTERERS-BAT (VU) - Myotis nattereri
GREATER-HORSE-SHOE-BAT (VU) - Rhinolophus ferrumequinum
LESSER-HORSE-SHOE-BAT (VU) - Rhinolophus hipposideros

The diversity of wildlife in the river is no different from land, more than 40 different species can be found, between amphibians and fish, some of which are also endangered, such as:

BROOK-LAMPREI (CR) - Lampetra planeri
EUROPEAN-EEL (EN) - Anguilla anguilla
BORDALO (VU) - Rutilus alburnoides
RAY-FINNED-FISH (EN) - Cobitis calderoni
